Fairport Scarecrow Festival 2008

Fairport Scarecrow Festival Date Set

All Are Invited to Join Scarecrow Competition

Imaginations can soar with “open” theme

A long established Fairport tradition continues on Saturday, October 11, 2008 when the Fairport Perinton Merchants Association’s Scarecrow Festival kicks off the fall season in this canal side community. Long a favorite of the locals, the Scarecrow Festival has grown steadily over the decades to become a major regional tourism event.

Each year, thousands are drawn to this affluent Rochester suburb, cum summer resort destination, nestled along the banks of the historic Erie Canal, to witness the spectacle of dozens of creatively designed and colorfully decorated Scarecrows lining the Main Street business district. Individual merchants, school and community groups, service and religious organizations, create original works of “agri-art” to festoon lampposts and telephone poles, in hopes of winning one of the cash prizes and ribbons awarded to the best entries.

This year, the event does not have a specific theme though that day is also Fairport High School Football Homecoming. Their theme is “It’s a small world.” Entrants may choose to design their scarecrow tableau accordingly.

About the Fairport Perinton Merchants Association

Fairport is located along the historic Erie Canal in suburban Rochester. The Village of Fairport is situated within the Town of Perinton, and is located in the southeast quadrant of Monroe County, New York. Fairport is a favorite stop for boaters during the summer months as they travel the canal. Many fine local restaurants and a variety of retail shops line the streets of the area.

The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association Inc. (FPMA) is a non-profit civic organization of retail merchants and other business owners in the Village of Fairport and the Town of Perinton.

The organization was formed in 1979 for the purpose of promoting local commerce in the area. There are many benefits of membership, including collective and subsidized advertising programs, participation in sponsored business seminars and the sharing of ideas with other local business owners.

The FPMA sponsors several events throughout the year, including Fairport Canal Days. Fairport Canal Days is a very popular arts and crafts show held the first weekend in June. Over 250,000 people attend the festival each year.

FPMA also provides Christmas lighting for the Village, hanging flower baskets lining Main Street in the summer and many other improvements for the beautification of our community. Last, but not least, FPMA contributes significant dollars to numerous local charitable organizations.

The Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association Inc. is a proud member of the Greater Rochester Visitors Association and the Finger Lakes Association.
